Starting five-language localization in an interactive film workflow: define scope with a meaning freeze package
Changing images need not hold every translation. Freeze story meaning, character knowledge and branch consequences per item, then use permitted changes, receipts and rework paths to start four targets alongside the Simplified Chinese source for a five-language release.

Start an interactive film workflow when meaning is settled, before every image is final
Localization can start by text item when dialogue intent, character knowledge and branch consequences have explicit decisions. Deliver a meaning freeze package; items that could still change these conditions must wait. The freeze defines narrative agreements translation can rely on this round, not a promise the film will never change.
The writer and editor supply source text, route conditions and versioned reference images. The localization lead identifies the stable scope and distributes materials based on the same source. Receipt records must identify the basis, constraints and where to send questions; they do not establish that subtitles fit the final edit.
W3C WAI recommends planning audiovisual accessibility early. Accordingly, record relevant needs early. The meaning freeze package is an original handoff design, not proof of compliance with a standard.
Separate translatable and waiting items with an unresolved shot
The Last Station Recording is a fictional interactive mystery short-film teaching case, not a real user case, test result or product feature. Records are proposed examples, not automatic DramaFork operations.
Investigator Su He heard a recording and knows the attendant entered a closed waiting room; companion Chen Mo did not hear it. On reunion Su He says, “Someone went in tonight.” Viewers next choose “Ask further about the time” or “Inspect the door lock.” This round starts Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese and Korean target packages from a Simplified Chinese source. Source plus four targets form the site’s five-language release scope.
The writer has decided that the line confirms someone entered without revealing identity; Chen Mo remains uninformed, and the two choices only change investigation order. The editor is still choosing between a corridor wide shot and a closer shot of Su He. If all candidate images withhold identity, this line can be translated first while exact subtitle timing waits.
“You heard it too” must wait: the director has not decided whether Chen Mo is shown eavesdropping. The missing condition is what makes the dialogue valid; translators cannot supply their own interpretation. The kickoff list must name the decision being awaited so one pending line does not hold the whole scene.
A meaning freeze package gives four targets one source basis
Use this minimum template. Text IDs stay stable; revisions have separately recorded versions. Locations in the table are teaching placeholders; formal handoff must supply file locations recipients can open.
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Package and source version | Waiting-room package V2; Simplified Chinese source draft V5 |
| Text ID and source | Dialogue017: “Someone went in tonight” |
| Applicable entry | Reunion after Su He alone finished listening to the recording |
| Image evidence | Corridor V3, 8–11 seconds after clip start |
| Character knowledge | Su He knows the attendant entered; Chen Mo does not; audience heard the recording |
| Frozen meaning | Confirm entry; no identity; no implied shared knowledge |
| Later dependency | “Ask further about the time” must not become “Demand to know who entered” |
| Length limit | Provisional 3-second display, at most 2 lines; each target reports feasibility on receipt |
| Variable items | Shot size, color grading, pre-line pause; final timing pending |
| No unilateral changes | Entrant identity, knowledge relationships, choice consequences |
| Rework channel | Return a change form identified by text ID; localization lead consolidates; writer decides meaning |
| Receipt record | Target language, received package version, questions, recipient, date |
Three seconds and two lines are provisional production boundaries, not universal five-language reading standards. If meaning cannot fit, provide a complete expression and compressed candidate; the lead decides longer display, changed wording or deferral. Do not require removing key negations.
Each target adds translation and question columns under the same Simplified Chinese version and constraints. Do not silently change source in language copies. Source contradictions become shared issues; language-specific grammar decisions remain in that target’s record.
Before distribution, the writer confirms meaning, the editor confirms reference images and permitted changes, and the localization lead confirms IDs and file access. Each of the four target recipients records the received version and supplies a Chinese paraphrase explaining what will be retained and what will not be added. If any confirmation is missing, the corresponding item still awaits receipt. Record the confirmed source version and its owner separately; it is not a fifth translation receipt package.
A revision can revoke meaning freeze without changing dialogue
Suppose the English recipient returns a Chinese gloss: “Someone entered there tonight, without identifying who,” and asks whether entry implies breaking in. The writer replies that there is no evidence of breaking in. The localization lead adds “Do not add forced entry” to package V3, notifies all four target-language recipients and updates the source constraint record; replying only to the questioner is insufficient.
Next, the editor replaces the wide shot with a closer shot without changing sound, information reveal or display duration. The lead records the new image version and confirms frozen fields are unchanged; translation can continue. Final subtitle timing still awaits placement in the finished edit. The difference record explains the basis for retaining work so the next person can check it.
Then the director proposes an insert of Chen Mo secretly listening through headphones. Unchanged words now sit with changed knowledge. The localization lead must pause Dialogue017 and later lines dependent on Chen Mo not knowing; submit “old facts, new facts, affected IDs, questions awaiting a decision.” Items independent of this fact may continue.
If the insert remains, the writer must decide whether Su He informs or probes, issue a new meaning version and update the source basis. Each of the four target-language recipients records whether the old translation is retained, revised or discarded, with reasons, then confirms receipt again. The rework record must preserve at least the new package version, recipient and open issues. “Notified” does not prove the change entered translation work.
Batch receipts manage risk; starting is not final acceptance
For this short film, stable dialogue and investigation choices can be distributed first while lines dependent on the eavesdropping shot are withheld. If an undecided fact spans the whole scene and splitting packages obscures the full tonal turn, wait for that scene’s narrative decision. Style exploration may use a trial package clearly barred from serving as the formal translation basis.
A freeze most readily fails by fixing words while allowing images to reveal secrets; another failure leaves undefined length without an owner. For the former, revoke the freeze for affected items. For the latter, specify who will supply the limits and which picture decision they must wait for. If impact is unclear, pause related scenes, establish dependencies, then narrow rework.
Handoff evidence includes source confirmation and each of four targets’ received package, permitted items, understood constraints, remaining blockers and change owner. It excludes the final timeline, display at the actual entry points and overall five-language quality acceptance including the Simplified Chinese source. Traceable start decisions give later changes a clear return location.
