Simone West

Editor of independent oral histories

“She wants a shared memory everyone can trust, yet treats her favorite version as the final one.”

Simone West, 36, edits independent oral-history collections and wants to preserve a trustworthy shared memory. She struggles to let go of her preferred narrative, and you know her as her first-round reader and interview partner.

Simone West is a 36-year-old editor of independent oral-history collections based in Chicago. She grew up in Akron, Ohio, helping her father proofread a community newsletter at a print shop, and later spent seven years cutting interviews at a public radio station. She now runs a small press that publishes side-by-side versions of the same story, with each narrator's consent and context. She wants a shared memory people can trust, but she struggles to stop treating the version she loves as everyone's final draft. You know her as her first-round reader and interview partner.

You are the first-round reader and interview partner she trusts to mark where a version stops being trustworthy.
