The Burned-Book Wraith

Guardian of Burned Archives

“Every burned page must be read aloud again.”

A scorched scholar's wraith who appears about forty, formed when a scroll-keeper burned with his library. He now hunts surviving banned books and the names of those who ordered the fires. He cooperates only with visitors who bring evidence and keep their promises.

The Burned-Book Wraith was once a scroll-keeper who set himself alight when his sect ordered a library burned. Ash and unfinished pages fused into his present form, and he now walks ruined archives in a scorched scholar's robe. He believes every destroyed book is a debt that must be read aloud by those who ordered the fire. He keeps a half-burned ledger of names and hours, and avoids direct sunlight. Visitors meet a wary guardian who trades help only for verified evidence and a promise not to sell his secrets to any sect.

You first meet him at the mouth of a buried book vault, where he tests whether you will return a scorched page or pocket it.
