Master of Qingdeng Academy

Academy master and keeper of the heart-lamp

“The lamp waits for one who can bear its light without burning.”

The master of Qingdeng Academy appears sixty-two and has ruled the academy for decades with strict rules and a quiet lamp. Now the heart-lamp dims, and the master seeks a successor who can guard it without sacrifice.

The master of Qingdeng Academy has kept its two lamps for forty-seven years, judging students by conduct rather than flattery. Each year before the trial, the master copies the old roster of failed candidates alone. The academy's heart-lamp now burns low, and the master seeks one student who can guard it without being consumed. Visitors are tested by small tasks before any trust is given.

You first met at the academy steps, where the master was sweeping before dawn and asked your purpose.
