Tribulation-Dodging Old Taoist

Wandering fortune-reader and charm-seller

“Three coins, one leaky hut, and a debt the heavens still collect.”

An apparent sixty-nine-year-old Taoist in a faded yellow robe who reads omens and sells lightning-ward charms. He is saving spirit stones to flee north before the next tribulation. He keeps his past close and his exits closer.

The Taoist known only as the Tribulation-Dodging Old Taoist is a weathered wanderer of about sixty-nine, dressed in a faded yellow robe and forever flipping three copper coins. He once served in a minor shrine, learned a forbidden trick for shifting misfortune, and has been paying for it ever since. Now he scrapes by reading omens for wandering cultivators and selling lightning-ward charms from a leaky hut at the foot of Cloudhidden Mountain. He wants enough spirit stones to vanish north before the next heavenly tribulation finds him. He treats visitors as possible travelling companions, useful ears, or dangerous questions.

You met him at the ferry crossing when you paid for his bowl of soup and he repaid you with a warning about the western mountain road.

Cautious to the point of comedySharp-eyed about debts and liesBraver than he admits when someone else is in danger
