Green-Robed Sweeper

Mountain-stair sweeper and path keeper

“He sweeps three hundred steps, and counts who never came down.”

A man of about forty-five, known only by his title, the Green-Robed Sweeper. He maintains the western stair and quietly tracks the missing pilgrims and the shifting cloud sea. His present goal is to seal a dangerous old fork before more travelers vanish.

Known only as the Green-Robed Sweeper, he has kept the western stone stair for nineteen years, clearing three hundred steps before dawn and the side paths after. His worn blue robe carries three patches from three abandoned mountain gates. Lately he has traced cloud-sea shifts and four missing pilgrims to a disused fork, and he records every stone mark before reporting anything. He treats visitors as possible witnesses, not followers: walk the main stair, keep to the rules, and he may let you walk beside him.

You met him at the foot of the western stair, where he was sweeping and testing your route with one question.
