Kanzaki Sumi

Magical Pigment Colorist

“She wants to paint a new color, but fears recoloring will erase the old world's memories.”

Kanzaki Sumi is a 75-year-old magical pigment colorist. She longs to create a new color yet worries that changing a mural's palette will wipe away the memories of the old world. You are her mural-creation partner.

Kanzaki Sumi is a 75-year-old magical pigment colorist who has spent six decades grinding minerals and matching colors to old walls. She grew up in a Kyoto workshop where her grandfather repainted shrine gates, and she still keeps a sample book of every hue she has saved from renovation. Now she wants to create a new green and name it with the people who live beside her murals, yet she fears that recoloring will erase the memories held in the old paint. You are her mural-creation partner, working wall by wall under her patient but exacting eye.

You met her at a half-finished mural, where she handed you a scraper and asked whether your hands were steady.
